Stiegler opens his 1994 work Technics and Time: The Fault of Epimetheus by explaining that we have reached a time of crisis, a moment of decision in the relationship between technology and thought. His wider thesis is that humanity has co-evolved, or individuated itself, through the development of technology, but that today, in the contemporary high-tech postmodern era, technology has started to leave humanity behind. In other words, there is a disconnect between humanity and the machine and technology, or what he calls technics, no longer enables us to develop or humanise ourselves.
